Kid-Friendly Summer Activities

August is Family Fun Month. It’s the finale of summer vacation and a great last-chance for families to get some quality time together. If you are using part of the next two weeks to take a vacation, you may be wondering what to do with the kids? Traveling with kids can be frustrating, and keeping them busy no easy task. But get the most out of your vacation, and spend time with the family with a few of these kid-friendly summer vacation activity ideas.

Bring toys to the beach. Kids and adults use the beach for very different reasons. Adults love to relax while kids like to stay busy. Don’t give up your peaceful beach vacation. Make sure to pack lots of buckets, shovels and other plastic beach delights that will keep the kids busy. You’ll be surprised how long they will spend digging in the sand, while you read your favorite book.

Take the kids on an adventure. Think a cruise is just for adults? There are lots of summer cruises that will delight any age, and many that cater to families. One of the most underrated cruises is to Alaska. Beat the heat and give the kids a memory of a lifetime.

Fit in something just for them. If you’re going away for a week, or longer, give the kids a day just for them. Find activities, like a water park or amusement park that’s close by to your vacation destination. Giving them time to blow off steam will keep you more relaxed, and parks are a great place for family adventure!

Get outdoors. Take the family to the mountains of your choice and do some hiking. It’s a great way to completely leave the office behind, and the kids will get a lot of the activity they crave. A good hike in the woods is one of my favorite childhood memories with my own family.

Go for a family boat ride. You can rent anything from a kayak to pontoon or larger boat. Get the family together and experience life on the water. Kids who have never been on the water will love to look at all the wildlife.

Keep it simple at home. If you’re staying home this summer, there’s plenty to do right in your own back yard. Have a family cookout and let the kids be a part of the cooking process. Do a family face-paint day. Set up a tent in the backyard and “camp” in the comfort of your own environment. Those are just a few examples! Let your imagination and family plan a whole day together doing fun things at home.
